Six basic tips for Super Smash Bros Brawl

April 29th, 2008

Super Smash Bros Brawl is finally here. The eagerly awaited sequel to Super Smash Bros and Super Smash Bros Melee has kept all of the elements that made the franchise so successful in the past. While skilled players will pick up SSBB quickly, it will be a bit more difficult for first time players. Let me give 6 initial tips that should help new comers get a fast grip of SSBB’s ins and outs.

Break the Smashball at the right time

A new feature in SSBB are the final smashes. Final smashes are a kind of finishing move that can be achieved by breaking the Smashball when it appears. Most people will rush to hit the Smashball as soon as it appears. Wait until your opponent rushes towards the Smashball and hit him while he is wide open, you will then be in the perfect position to give him a final smash.

Use your jumps carefully

Too much people make the error of using all of their jumps at the same time. The best way to use your jumps is when you are at the lowest point possible or when someone is trying to hit you in mid air. Using all of your jumps at the same time will leave you open while you come back to the ground.

Don’t use the WIImote

The WIImote is extremely inefficient with SSBB. The game’s quick movements can just not be made by twisting and turning the WIImote in all directions. It’s better to stick with the WIImote + Nunchuck combination or the classic Game Cube controller.

Forget L-cancelling and wavedashing

L cancelling and wavedashing have been removed from SSBB, so there will be a learning curve for the people that were used to these techniques in the previous versions. You will have to rely much more on your short hopping and fast falling skills in SSBB.

Forget the shield

The shield drops much faster in this version of Super Smash Bros, so your options are no longer just to grab or keep the shield up until it breaks. Learn how to use your quick blows after you drop your shield.

Brawl is not Melee

Many modifications were made to this version of Super Smash Bros, so don’t make the mistake of playing this game the way you used to play Melee. This version seems a lot more technical, and it should be since it’s the first next gen console version of the game. So make sure you explore all of the game’s techniques and characters.

So have fun playing the wonderful game that SSBB is and remember that you can never learn enough about the game, so keep practicing until you become the undisputable Super Smash Bros Brawl King!

7 basic BioShock tips

April 12th, 2008

BioShock can look like any other first person shooter at first sight, but it is much more complex than it may seem. Let me give you some tips and tricks that should help you get trough BioShock a lot more easily.

Choose the right ammo

Choosing the right ammo is very important in BioShock. The machine gun and pistol use three types of ammunition: anti-personnel, anti-armor and regular. The anti-personnel and anti-armor ammo is much rarer then regular ammo. In the beginning, I suggest you keep your anti-armor and anti-personnel to fight Big Daddies only. As for shotguns, they are not as useful as the may seem. I usually only use them with Electric ammo to stun some Big Daddies or to take out security cameras.

Do not discard your wrench

Even though it’s the first weapon you start with, your wrench can be useful even at the end of the game. The key is to use tonics that would make it more powerful. And also remember that you can combine the effects of two similar tonics if you use them in different slots.

Use hacking tonics

If you’re like me, and you hate the hacking mini game, I suggest you put a couple of hacking tonics into your engineering tonic slots when you can. It will make it go much faster. Tonics will only get you so far though, so you will have to practice your hacking skills.

Learn how to use the Vita Chamber

Instead of reloading your game each time you die, you should learn how to use the Vita chamber. Sometimes, it can be better to die and reload the game, but it is sometimes better to respawn in a Vita Chamber. Just choose carefully which option is better for you.

How to deal with Splicers

Head shots are the best way to get rid of pesky Splicers. The best ammo to use when it comes to Splicers is antipersonnel ammo. If you are running low on these, and you are facing Thug or Houdini Splicers, it’s better to dodge their melee attacks and use your wrench.

How to deal with Big Daddies

When you are facing Big Daddies, remember that explosives are very effective against them. Use proximity mines or grenades if you want to cause some serious damage. The most effective weapon against Big Daddies is the Grenade Launcher loaded with Heat-Seeking missiles. When you are facing a Bouncer, try to side step when they charges you, it will give you a few extra seconds to give him a good blow. If you are facing a Rosie, make sure you take cover from their rifles and only shoot back at them when they cease fire.

Have fun

Learn how to appreciate the game and fully explore all of its possibilities. The more you learn about the enemies, weapons and levels, the more you are going to like the game. Don’t take this game as just another Duke Nukem look alike.

I hope these tips will help make your quest a bit easier… Do not forget to study all of the elements of the game fully so you will be able to truly master BioShock and take advantage of its multiple facets.
