As with many of Microsoft’s products, there is always a little of the good, the bad, and the ugly mixed in together. The Xbox 360 Elite is no different. Just because it has a great name to it like the word Elite does not necessarily mean that the product stands above all others, particularly when we are discussing or comparing it with the other top two dogs like Sony with their PlayStation 2 and PS3, and Nintendo’s latest, the Wii console.
The good part about Xbox Elite is the HDMI compatibility with the newest High Definition TVs that flooded the market in the past couple of years. The other great thing about the console is the 160 Gigabytes Hard Drive coupled with a live Marketplace service because gamers can store digital content allowing them to view HD content and images, plus buy gaming content, Mini-games, High Def movies and even Television shows.
To be honest, I do have to admit that the integration of the High Definition DVD player is good too. The thing about it though is that people were expecting to see a bigger or more dramatic difference in the quality of images versus the older predecessor – the original Xbox 360 that came out a couple of years ago.
This leads me into the bad part about the Gaming Console. The truth is the DVD player is way too noisy, there is not a built-in wireless networking which means you will have to get an added accessory that fits on the outside of the box to run the High Definition movies. To top it off, it costs a pretty penny to use the live marketplace feature or to use the Xbox Elite for multi players because you have to get a monthly subscription.
The ugly part about the Xbox Elite Console is the high priced subscription I mentioned above. What fathers, mothers, or set of parents are going to keep spending this much money with the economy the way it is right now, just so their child or children can tap into an area where they will want to spend more money or play with their neighbor friends online?
This type of experience may be a little different for you if you are an experienced and more elaborate gamer,. Having the kind of money that is required to use all the features does have perks. You may want to invest. As for me though, I will stick with the earlier version of the 360 Xbox.
The rest of the ugly is simply the external accessories you have to get and hook up to the console. Most of them are bulky, like the hook up for the HDMI 1.2 connector. One more thing that truly bugged me is the proprietary for wireless format. It limits third-party accessories so you can basically only buy from the manufacturer which is the Microsoft Corporation.
I say stick with the version of Xbox 360 that came out two years ago if you have it. Don’t waste your money, you are not missing out on much.
